Chapter 1

HISTORY OF SCIENCE FICTION ZINE

Final Outcome for my Visions of the Past: Artist/Designer as Historian L5 module

Sci-fi, or speculative fiction, is important because it is a way for humans to explore and question both theoretical and real-life concepts we encounter, to reflect on their benefits and ethics, and what they mean for humanity on both an individual and wider scale. It is a way for us to reflect on who we are as a species, and what we are capable of, in both positive and negative contexts. The genre is a continuous form of self-reflection, powered by human imagination, the driving force behind all of humanity’s power.

It is important to look at the bigger picture and progression, rather than just one small aspect, as changing opinions and views become clearer, alongside the evolution of new concepts, concerns and ideas, which often shown through popular themes and subgenres at the time. The wider picture shows how history affects the psyche and imagination.

Thus far I have only completed up to the 1970s, the rest of the content up to present day will be uploaded over the summer.
